Pros and Cons of Running an In Home Daycare or Child Care Business
72
Many new moms mull over the idea of running their own daycare. Daycare can be expensive. Sometimes you are better off staying home with your own kids, and looking after a few others for a little bit of cash.
Its tough work though. In the five years I've done childcare, I have seen many day cares start up and close down.
Here are some of the pros and cons I have found over the years.
Pros
- If you have children of your own, you get to stay home with them.
- It eliminates your own child care costs.
- You don't have to go anywhere for work. No transportation costs, clothing, lunches, etc.
- Your children can make new friends.
- You have a good excuse to buy new toys and art supplies for your home, and it may be a tax write off.
- You can set your own hours.
Cons
- Your kids may not want to share their mom and their toys all day long.
- You can't just send a child home if they are not getting along with the others.
- Having so many other kids around exposes your family to more germs, so you will be sick more often.
- You will have more cleaning up to do.
- Your pay will fluctuate if kids are sick, families go in holiday or parents lose their jobs.
Home daycare is not a job for everyone, but i have found the pros to outweigh the cons.
If you decide to give it a try, I recommend you start slowly. Take in one or two kids, part time at first, so you can see what it is like.
You also need to find children that your own children can play with for hours on end. Don't be afraid to tell a parent if it is just not working out. Trust me, it can be a nightmare to look after a child your child does not get along with. It is nothing personal, some kids just don't get along.
It is also nice if your family has an area of the house that is off limits to other children so they can have quiet time to themselves, if they want it.

Its a thankless job. Parents look at you as a baby sitter not a professional. Parents want to pay as little as possible but they want their children to attend your daycare over 8 hours per day without paying any overtime. You are not compensated for sick time, vacation time, State of emergencies etc, Yet the parents are paid for these things by their employer. Providers are trained and meet EEC standards just like centers, and school. Preschool are no different from home daycare. Both teach curriculums, are in a food program and daycare providers must have 10 hours training per year yet we are under paid. Never enroll a family of 2 plus children because when the parent decides to pull their children out, then you are screwed! Big time turn over, you may be without income months at a time. Not a job for people who need a steady weekly income.I love children but this business sucks.
I provide home based child care and as much as I love the children that I care for, some days I find my job quite daunting and don't feel like looking after kids especially if the kids don't like to listen, but they can cheer you up and have you laughing with the cute and funny things that they say and do. If you love children then do it :-)
This is definitely not for everyone, however, I love kids and still feel like a kid myself. It's just to sit back and watch the little minds at work.
Great hub. People thought I should do home daycare but it is just not for me. It is not easy like you stated perfectly.

Yes, there is definitely a downside to this business, daycare provider. Thanks for pointing out the problems that you can have. I have not found it to be so terrible however. The parents of the kids i care for have for the most part been pretty good to me. It makes a big difference.
