Wii My Fitness Coach is a personalized fitness program you can buy for your Nintendo Wii. It is good for all levels of fitness from beginners to advanced.

You can choose what area you want to focus on: weight loss, cardio, upper body, lower body, core, flexibility or yoga. Choose the environment you work out in and the music you work out to. Maya, your personal trainer, will lead you through exercises that are easy and fun. It is geared to your level of fitness. You can increase the difficulty as you get fitter. The exercises are basic, easy to follow and fun.

Wii My Fitness Coach is the best thing that has happened to my home gym. I have owned my copy for a year now.

Before I bought this Wii game, I usually used exercise DVDs for my workout. I would get sick of them after doing them a couple of times and I had to keep buying new ones. I still do my DVDs once in a while for variety, but mainly use My Fitness Coach for my workouts. I have done 170 workouts this year and am still not sick of it.

How to Begin

First you will have to start a personal profile.

You will have to enter personal information like your age, gender, and weight. You can also enter your measurements to track your progress.

Next Maya will lead you through a physical challenge to determine your current fitness level. You will do squats, push ups, crunches and jumping jacks and a forward fold to test your flexibility. Maya will gather up all of this information and will set up a program just for you with what she thinks you should focus on. She will set up a schedule you can follow. This is all optional. You can choose your own focus and create your own schedule.

The workouts she gives you get harder as you get fitter. She monitors your progress by asking you to repeat the physical challenge every 10 workouts. Again this is optional, but recommended so that Maya can monitor your progress. She also asks you how you are feeling after every workout segment. If it was too difficult she will make your next workout easier, too easy and she will give you harder exercises.

But you don't need to wait until your next workout to change the level. At any time you can pause your workout and increase or decrease the level based on how you feel that day.

The Workout

You do not need any equipment at all for this program. If you do have a step, exercise ball, weights, or heart rate monitor, let Maya know and she will incorporate these into your plan.

This program has around 500 different exercises ranging in difficulty level from 1 to 5.

Each workout you do will have a warm up and a little stretch at the end. You can choose to do a 15, 30, 45, 60 or 75 minute workout. You will work on your focus area each time you work out. For me this means arm exercises with every workout.

The cardio moves are basic and easy to follow. You will do things like marches or grapevines at a beginner level and progress to jumping jack variations and jogging for more advanced. You will do each move for 30-60 seconds before going on to the next one.

Lower body moves include lunge, squat and plie variations. Often there are arm exercises too, a plie with bicep curls for example.

Upper body has basic weight lifting moves and push up variations.

Core workout has different crunches, ball moves and pilates.

Flexibility workouts include basic stretching and yoga moves.

And the yoga workout is all yoga. You will start with a few sun salutations to warm up and do different yoga poses.

Check it out:

What I love about this program:

  • I think the exercises are easy to do and fun.
  • I can increase the difficulty as I get fitter
  • I can decrease the difficulty if I want an easier workout one day.
  • The workout is different every time I do it so it never gets boring.
  • It costs less than twenty dollars.
  • It is a well rounded program covering cardio, strength and flexibility.
  • I can choose what I I want to focus on.
  • It tells you what exercise is coming up so you can prepare.
  • You get a water break every 15 minutes.

What I don't like:

  • The music is boring. I usually just turn on the radio.
  • Every workout includes high impact moves. If you can't do them this workout is not for you.
  • On the yoga sun salutations, she explains it once and makes you do it three times. You have to keep looking at the screen to see what she is doing.
  • Her comments can get a little annoying.

I really think the pros outweigh the cons on this game, especially since it is so inexpensive.
